CASNG had a big day on Sunday 18th November, with workshops held across two venues. Next year we spread our events over 2 weekends so that you can attend everything!
Cass, Jenny, Jenny, Gavin, Sian, Meg and Kieran had a wonderful morning volunteering to deliver Dreaming of a Waste Free Christmas at Ulinga Hall in Cardiff South.
It was a lovely festive and friendly morning with many people bringing along home made goodies to share. There was lots of laughter and smiles and some familiar faces attending workshops for a second or third time.

It was a lovely festive and friendly morning with many people bringing along home made goodies to share. There was lots of laughter and smiles and some familiar faces attending workshops for a second or third time.
The morning began with 16 people making sustainable Christmas Wreaths, using cardboard, coathangers, local foliage and little else. Participants were generous, bringing along second hand “bibs ‘n’ bobs” to decorate the wreaths including ribbons, baubles, bells and beads. The distinctive scents of rosemary, conifer, coriander and native plants characterised this workshop. Some people stayed on to make a total of 17 people in the bees wax wrap workshop. We made wraps with beautiful Christmas fabric in order to eliminate our use of plastic wrap. If you have made bees wax wraps before you will know the hall now smelt like melting wax, just as pleasant as the foliage. Although we only had 7 people booked in for the Vegan Body Scrub workshop we ended up with 15 participants. All got to try 3 amazing sugar scrubs and a body butter. Fresh grated lime peel was the distinctive scent in this workshop. The Christmas Crackers workshop wasn’t so popular, however 2 people took home enough “snappers” to make their own crackers this Christmas. Let us know what you’d like us to present next year in lieu of Christmas Crackers. We welcomed people from Murray's Beach, Cooranbong, Morisset, Dora Creek, Ellalong, Redhead, Holmesville, Warners Bay, Cameron Park and Mayfield. BOOMERANG BAGS WORKSHOP Meanwhile over at Cardiff North Public School, Barry supervised our regular monthly Boomerang Bags Sewing Workshop which ended the year on a high note. As has become a pattern, regular attendees arrived with piles of finished recycled-fabric shopping bags which they had sewn at home during the past month – Barry estimates 25 to 30 bags. Another 10 to 15 were completed on Sunday. Lidija, who is a member of Redhead Sustainable Neighbour Group, took a number of finished bags, along with copies of how to sew bags patterns, which she will sell and give away at the Redhead SNG stall at the Redhead SLSC Xmas Fundraising Markets on 12th December, from 4 to 8pm. Lidija was impressed with our Boomerang Bags efforts at the CASNG Car Boot sale, and wants to repeat that at Redhead. Anna continues to find important uses for the bags that are made - with many being used to distribute food parcels to needy families - previously, donations would most likely have been handed out in plastic bags. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with everyone rating it 5 out of 5. They loved getting together with like minded people - “wonderful camaraderie”; “learning from others”; Doing something positive to help the environment & the community”; "sharing ideas”; “very sociable”; “great morning tea/lunch”; “positive atmosphere”; “companionship” - are a selection of some the comments. Thank you to all volunteers and participants - together we've made important contributions to cutting the use of plastic in Lake Macquarie, meaning less waste will going into landfill this Christmas. A special thank you goes to Anna from The Canopy who has done a fabulous job bringing supplies of fabric and thread to the workshops, getting fabric cut to shape, and in distributing the completed bags - Barry wouldn’t have been able to run the Workshops without her help. Our most popular workshops will return in 2019, with Boomerang Bags continuing on a monthly basis. Original Article This Christmas the volunteers from Cardiff Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group are encouraging people to slow down and make time to make things that are fun, low waste and sustainable. Across four workshops we'll be making Christmas wreaths, a vegan body scrub, bees wax wraps and Christmas Bon Bons. Feel free to bring a plate to share for morning tea - this is a great chance to meet other community members. We'd like to make "Waste Free Christmas" an annual event, so bring along your tips and tricks to make it bigger and better next year. Each workshop has a fee to cover expenses and hall hire.
