  Sustainable Neighbourhoods Lake Macquarie

CASNG would like to thank everyone who helped to
recycle, reuse, repurpose, renew, and repair, at our

TOWARDS ZERO WASTE
CAR BOOT SALE

held in SEPTEMBER 2018
at
CARDIFF BOWLING CLUB CAR PARK

On a wonderfully warm and sunny Sunday, there was brisk trade in goods at the second hand and hand-made goods stalls. Rotary sold a load of sausage sandwiches and the coffee van brewed some great coffee - thank you to all of those patrons who remembered to bring their own coffee cup to help reduce waste.

Stall holders sold goods in fabric bags rather than plastic bags, and only a small amount of litter was created.

Lake Mac Boomerang Bags helped to reduce plastic use, by giving away take-home-to-sew shopping bag kits - many keen locals will be attempting to make their own shopping bags from recycled fabric. A small number of fruit & veggie bags were also sold, to help reduce even further the community's reliance on plastic bags.

Mandy McDonald, local Landcare Leader and Hunter Bird Observers Club expert, conducted two tours of the Cardiff South Wetland area. A surprisingly large group of enthusiastic locals were given an informative guided tour of this little known area. At the CASNG stall there was a display of local birds and plants of the Wetland, and photos of the history of the area, including aerial photos.
More locals now know about this hidden ecological gem right in Cardiff.

Another very pleasant Sunday morning in Cardiff.

Christmas Car Boot Sale, November 2017

A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED OUR

CHRISTMAS CAR BOOT SALE on SUNDAY 19th NOVEMBER

There was a treasure trove of Recycled, Reused, Repurposed, Renewed or Repaired Christmas bargains all with a CHRISTMAS THEME.

Local residents took the opportunity to sell their beautiful hand made craft items, or to share their unwanted household goods with others, who could put them to good use - just in time for Christmas gift giving.

CASNG was pleased to welcome our Sustainable Neighbourhood neighbour - Greater Charlestown SNG - to this car boot sale.
We hope other SNG's will join us at our next car boot sale in 2018.

Cardiff Rotary Club helped us out, and raised some money for their projects by conducting a sausage sizzle for us - hopefully there'll be other opportunities for our groups to work together in the future.
Even our coffee van, Coffee Van Gogh, entered into the Christmas spirit by donating some of his proceeds to CASNG - thanks Peter.

Reduce Reuse Recycle Car Boot Sale - August 2017

Our recycled, reused, repurposed, renewed, or repaired Car Boot Sale
was a resounding success
.

All stalls were fully booked, and 450 to 500 willing customers visited on the day.
After their popular appearance last year, students from Cardiff High
once again kicked up a musical storm.
The CASNG stall was busy giving out free Boomerang Bag making kits and free vegetable seeds thanks to LMCC. No plastic shopping bags were in sight, thanks to the shopping bags also provided free by LMCC.
The Salvos sausage sizzle, and a coffee van were also kept busy.
Lake Macquarie SES was there with some timely hints about preparing for floods and storms, and took pride in showing off their brand new truck.

To top it all off - the weather was perfect!

CHRISTMAS CAR BOOT SALE - NOV 2016
Picture
Car Boot Sales are popular in the Cardiff Area.
After holding what was then considered a successful Car Boot Sale in August, our Christmas Car Boot Sale exceeded all expectations by having over double the number of stalls to August, and being fully booked out. Enquiries were still coming in the night before.
And customer numbers of 300 to 350 show that locals also see the sales as a great place to pick up a bargain.
The weather was kind to us with a mild temperature, patchy cloud, and only an occasional very light sprinkle of rain.
CASNG aims to encourage the 3 R’s of reduce, recycle and reuse, and it was pleasing to see a number of second-hand goods stalls helping the community to recycle and reuse.
We also had a number of stalls selling quality new items as well.
Camp Quality raised some useful funds by running a popular sausage sizzle stall, and the coffee van was equally kept busy throughout the morning.
CASNG invited the Macquarie Hills Community Preschool to set up a stall at this sale, in what we hope will be the first of many opportunities for other local community groups to let the people of the Cardiff area know what they do.
The Preschool’s free give-away of play dough proved to be very popular.
In what we hope will be a continuing collaboration, students, their parents & the music teacher from Cardiff High School, sang and played guitars for about 3 hours, providing some much appreciated entertainment throughout.
Our own stall also attracted interest with a number of free give-aways – courtesy of the Alliance and LMCC. Demonstrations of paper seedling-pot making, and how to make use of left-over coffee grounds were also well received.
It was confirmed how special the event was, when Santa himself paid us a visit - checking for any last minute Christmas requests from the kids - and also getting a few from the not-so-young.
A short survey of the mostly positive stallholders indicated strong support for more Car Boot Sales during 2017 – stay tuned!

Cardiff Neighbourhood Day and Car Boot Sale
August 2016

The Cardiff Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group held a wonderful Car Boot Sale and Neighbourhood Day in August.

Lots of locals came out to support the event, enjoy the sunshine, and grab a bargain.

The event incorporated opportunity for a range of community groups.
  • The Salvation Army had a Coffee Cart.
  • Cardiff Scouts held a BBQ.
  • The Cardiff Men's Shed were spreading the word about what they can do for the community.
  • Cardiff Fire and Rescue Service visited for over an hour, allowing local children to clamber in and over their fire tanker.

Stallholders had a great time and raised some cash, and attendees said they are keen to see it become a regular event.
A big THANK YOU to the Cardiff Area Sustainable Neighbourhood volunteers for helping to make the day a great success - especially the Sub-Committee of Jenny, Gavin and Kerry, who spent months organising this community event.

This will no doubt become the first of many regular Car Boot Sales in Cardiff.
