  Sustainable Neighbourhoods Lake Macquarie
Make the switch to a reusable coffee cup today!
Plastic Free Cafes aims to reduce the amount of litter and waste created by single use plastic items such as takeaway coffee cups and plastic straws.

We are encouraging our community to Choose Reusable alternatives over single use plastic items.

In June 2022 we are delivering our next round of reusable coffee cups to participating cafes and coffee vans. They will be offering good quality reusable cups at a subsidised price of just $2, thanks to a Community Environment Grant from Lake Macquarie City Council.

Our first roll out of the reusable cups was completed in March 2020 in participating cafes in Warners Bay and Toronto, and we completed a second round in early 2021 at a number of cafes throughout the City.
Join the thousands of Lake Macquarie residents who are making the switch away from single-use plastics.

Plastic Free Cafes has already distributed 1300 reusable cups to Lake Mac coffee drinkers, through 36 Plastic Free Cafes, saving at least 13,000 takeaway cups from going to landfill.
Show your support
Visit our participating cafes and coffee vans to show your support for a Plastic Free Lake Mac, and pick up a cup, while stocks last.

Choose to reuse

Remember your cup
  • Leave a note at the door, set an alert on your phone, or put your cup straight into your bag or car after it's washed.

Don't be a Tosser
  • 'Disposable' cups are not recyclable. They either end up in landfill or littering our streets, parks and waterways.
Relax
  • If you get stuck without your reusable cup, take a few minutes to sit down for your coffee.
Keep it clean
  • Wash your cup as soon as you can. If you're on the move, rinse it out and wash up properly later.
Feel good
  • Choosing a reusable cup prevents waste, litter and carbon emissions.

Tips for using reusables during Covid-19
The Boomerang Alliance and Plastic Free Places program has developed this guide for retailers and customers about safely using reusable coffee cups and other common takeaway items.
Viruses and bacteria can exist on both single-use and reusables alike. Single-use items are not cleaner or safer - it’s about following good hygiene practices. Normal dishwashing practices can remove the virus from reusables - the same cannot be said for single-use packaging, which usually cannot be washed.

NSW Food Authority website contains more information for customers and businesses about managing reusables during Covid-19.
A food handler does not have to accept re-usable containers from customers, especially if they are dirty.

About the project
Grant funding from the Lake Macquarie City Council's Community Environment Grants has enabled us to purchase good quality reusable cups in bulk, and to distribute them to local businesses for sale at a subsidised price. Please get in touch if your business is interested in participating in future Plastic Free Lake Mac projects.
