Meet Berit
Conversations with a super star
Berit is passionate about renewable energy, and changing the world.
We had a conversation about getting involved and taking local ownership of our environment. Berit is relatively new to Redhead and has found the Sustainable Neighbourhood Group was a great way to meet new people.
“I love working with like-minded people and helping the local community in different ways. I got to know a lot more about Redhead, like the history and what goes on in the area.”

“I’ve also enjoyed meeting Sustainable Neighbourhood volunteers from around Lake Macquarie.”
Berit was a member of the group for about a year and a half, before putting her hand up for the newsletter editor role about six months ago.
“I enjoy putting the newsletter together. I’m not a big writer, but I’ve been able to be proactive and encourage others to write articles. I’ve really enjoyed modernising it a bit, and making it look snazzy.”
“I’ve had a strong interest in sustainability for years, but this is the first time getting involved in a local group.”
Berit is also helping to spearhead the Redhead EnergyWave project, which is encouraging the uptake of solar in their neighbourhood.
“I have time and I am passionate about the environment. I can see how dependent we are on electricity, and the environmental impact of our coal industry. I’ve done some work on energy management in the past, and would like to see a move towards renewables. That’s where we can do something about the pollution.”
“Being involved in a local initiative helps us focus on a manageable scale.”
“The thing is, I’d love the whole world to change, but it’s such a grand scale. If we all do our little bit, eventually we’ll get there. Even on a household scale. What we do individually doesn’t feel like it’s changing the world, but it does – every little bit at a time.”
“I’d encourage anyone thinking about it to get involved. Sustainable Neighbourhoods is a great opportunity to do something positive for your local community, and meet some nice, like-minded people in the process.”
