Blacksmiths, Marks Point and Pelican Sustainable Neighbourhood Group are proud to announce the inaugural 2026 Waste on the Waterfront community initiative, to be held on Sunday 30 August at Swansea/Belmont SLC.

Our neighbourhoods are built around beautiful waterways, yet we continually see waste left on our waterfronts—causing serious injury and death to local marine wildlife. This community initiative is designed to remind anglers and the wider community of the causes, consequences and simple solutions to tackle marine waste.

Why This Matters
The damage caused by discarded fishing tackle and plastic waste is devastating. Hooks pierce pelicans' bills and gulls' feet. Plastic waste threatens turtles and other marine life. With two major boat ramp departure points to the lake and ocean at Pelican and Blacksmiths, our community also sees too many preventable tragedies on the water.

We recently lost a life on the lake because a lifejacket wasn't worn. Too many young men think "she'll be right" when they're out with mates—but mates need to be mates and support wearing a lifejacket, every single time.

Reduce Tackle waste and Lost Gear - Come and meet Jason Nunn well know Lake Macquarie Fisherman and Environmental Advocate
Clean Up Campaign – OzFish Clean up
Tackle Loop – Bring in any unused or old fishing tackle for repurposing
Kids Activities – Interactive information with Hunter Wildlife Rescue
DPI Kids Come Fish with Us – A fun, educational fishing event for young anglers
Lifejacket Safety – Sample lifejackets on display, plus update to date boating information with Maritime Education & Partnerships Officer.
