  Sustainable Neighbourhoods Lake Macquarie
Meet Robyn
Conversations with a super star
Chances are you already know Robyn, and her trusty sidekick Glinda the world famous squirrel glider!

But do you know what makes her so passionate about being a Sustainable Neighbourhood volunteer? Read our short interview talking about all things caring, connection and critters.

If you’ve met Glinda the squirrel glider, you will have been in good company. Her ‘carer’ Robyn Charlton is a champion for nature and the community – particularly around Lake Macquarie’s Westlake area.
Robyn is busy in her various Sustainable Neighbourhood roles and in leading a number of projects. One of which is the Pamper Care Project, which provides personal care and pantry items to those in need.

“Pamper Care changes peoples’ lives when they need it most. I’m proud that we’ve helped nearly 200 people, and given some hope and dignity to people doing it tough.”
“It’s a simple project, but so important. It lets people know that someone cares unconditionally, and brings a smile to people’s faces. I’m so thankful to have the connection with Woodrising Neighbourhood Centre who help distribute the items, as well as those thoughtful community members who continue to donate.”
The Community Harmony Initiative also sprung from Robyn’s volunteering efforts, through a partnership with Five Bays and Toronto Sustainable Neighbourhood Groups, Council, Ability Links and other local organisations.

They have created a series of wonderful Picnic in the Park events that have bolstered community connection and engagement. It’s this community spirit that Robyn enjoys about being involved in Sustainable Neighbourhoods.
“Sustainable Neighbourhoods gives me connectivity with my community. I love meeting new people, and have developed some firm friendships. It’s great to meet new people who are passionate about the same things as me.”

On taking on such a variety of roles, Robyn says, “I’m honoured to be in my various roles, and that people have confidence in my abilities.”
As well as caring for community, Robyn’s is also focused on protecting our natural environment, and the wonders of biodiversity, and has been an advocate for the creation of the Awaba Conservation Area for many years.
 “I’m motivated by future generations.

I got to see so much wonder in my own backyard as a child – bees buzzing around, and birds singing; spiders, ladybirds and beautiful big trees. I want our community’s children to have that same opportunity for connection.”
“We need to remind ourselves that we are not separate from everything else.
“If you want to see a better world, get involved!”
Robyn is Chair of the Sustainable Neighbourhood Alliance, and the Five Bays Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, as well as Vice Chair of the Toronto Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group.
Robyn also leads a number of projects such as Pamper Care, the Community Harmony Initiative, ReLeaf Lake Mac and more.
