Renewing Sustainable Neighbourhood Groups
Council and the Sustainable Neighbourhood Alliance are seeking to strengthen and expand the Sustainable Neighbourhood program, and are working with community members in two neighbourhood areas to establish and expand groups in:
- the 'Sugar Valley' district, including Barnsley, Cameron Park, Holmesville, Killingworth, Seahampton, Wakefield and West Wallsend
- the Belmont area, including Belmont, Belmont North, Belmont South, Floraville and Jewells
Sustainable Neighbourhood gatherings
Later this year we will be inviting residents to local community gatherings to kick off the development of Sustainable Neighbourhood groups in each of these areas.

Sustainable Neighbourhood surveys, April 2022
We are surveying local residents in the renewal areas to understand local attitudes about the environment, community priorities and possible neighbourhood projects. The survey results will inform the development of Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Plans for each group.
Surveys were posted to all households in the area during the week of 28 March and 4 April.
Visit local pages for the Belmont Area or Sugar Valley Sustainable Neighbourhood groups for survey results.

Identifying areas for renewal
Community survey 2021
A community survey and invitation to existing Sustainable Neighbourhood groups were completed in late 2021 to identify two neighbourhood areas for renewal. |

Key outcomes
We used an asset-based approach to identify community enthusiasm and local opportunities that are likely to result in the successful establishment or renewal of Sustainable Neighbourhood groups. We also strived to balance these opportunities with needs that are identified.

As a result of our engagement results, in 2022 we will:
- Work with the West Wallsend District Sustainable Neighbourhood Group to renew their membership, and expand their neighbourhood area to include Cameron Park (and Wakefield TBC).
- Establish a new group in the Belmont Area including suburbs of Belmont, Belmont North, Belmont South, Floraville and Jewells.
- Continue to deliver support for all Sustainable Neighbourhood groups, including continued implementation of the Sustainable Neighbourhood Strategic Plan, with a focus on impact, visibility, volunteer support and financial sustainability.
You can read more detail here about the engagement results.
