Rathmines Park Litter Project
Rathmines Park is situated on the shores of Lake Macquarie, and is a popular, heritage listed park with a boat jetty, covered picnic and bbq area, toilets, children’s playground, and swimming area. It is used daily by large numbers of locals and visitors for a wide variety of purposes. The park is particularly busy on public holidays during summer.
With it's popularity comes a significant litter problem.
There are several hardy souls who walk in the park with a bag and collect litter on a daily basis. Consequently the park mostly looks clean and inviting. However we would like to prevent the problem at it's source, and encourage park visitors to ensure our park is kept litter free.
After completing a local litter check, we found that drink cans and bottles, fast food containers, and junk food wrappers are the most common items that are littered.
We teamed up with Council and won a Community Litter Grant from Keep Australia Beautiful to have new litter and recycling bins installed at key locations in the park.
Our project also includes ongoing community engagement activities to discourage littering behaviour.
So far we have held a litter Clean Up in March, and we are planning a celebration and education night with a film screening and talk by Janet White from OCCI.
Our bag swap project at Rathmines shops is also helping to reduce consumption of single use plastic bags in our neighbourhood.
