  Sustainable Neighbourhoods Lake Macquarie
'Spare a Square' as part of the
Cardiff Pollinator Project
We all know about how the brutal bushfires of 2019/2020, followed by extensive flooding in 2020/2021 wiped out billions of trees, plants and native animals.
Part of the problem for a speedy regeneration of the bushland is the loss of hundreds of billions of plant pollinators - mostly birds and insects like native bees.

Local citizens have stepped in to help these pollinators – and you can join them.

Cardiff Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group (CASNG) is making it possible for locals to be involved with minimal cost.
CASNG Member Jennifer Maverick’s application to the Lake Macquarie Community Environment Grants program in 2019 was successful, and CASNG now have access to 100's of bird and insect attracting plants to give away to local residents in their Spare A Square project.

CASNG recently held a special Plant Giveaway to help promote this pollinator project.

Jennifer and the CASNG organisers are very pleased with how local residents responded to the Plant Giveaway.
Plants purchased by CASNG were placed into pollinator plant packs, and the 50 people who turned up on the day were delighted to receive 400 plants between them, to plant around their homes to attract pollinators.
CASNG Members provided prompt service, and our Landcare experts Mandy and Jenny, were able to provide invaluable advice about how to plant and take care of these precious plants.
A further 9 people who attended the earlier CASNG Frog Pond Workshops also registered for the Spare A Square project and took home another load of pollinator plants.
The Department of Education and Lake Macquarie City Council contacted CASNG in the week after the Plant Giveaway, to enquire about the Spare A Square project. Lake Mac Art Gallery, Newcastle University, and several local schools are now planning to Spare A Square metre of garden, in which to grow pollinator attracting plants.
For everyone who was lucky enough to receive their pollinator plant pack, please send your photos through to [email protected] if you haven’t already.

CASNG would love to secure funding to give away more plants, but this is directly tied to people following through on the conditions they agreed to. Please fully participate so we can pass it on to others and secure grant funding.

Jennifer helps local resident Meg, register for the project.
To make a change together, & to be part of the Spare A Square project, you need to accept the following conditions, in exchange for a pollinator plant pack:
o   You commit to establish and maintain at least a square metre of habitat for pollinators.
o   You give permission to use (we won't share) your address for GIS mapping of habitat.
o   You agree to provide photos of your square three times a year, so we can monitor and track the corridors     that are being created.

You can share your progress on the Instagram page @pollination.project – and send photos, find out more information, ask questions, or Register to be part of the project, and receive your pollinator plant pack, at [email protected]
