Join us for the celebrations at Wangi Centenary Festival on Sunday 23rd October 2016

Celebrate the anniversary of 100 years since the first sale of land on Wangi Point in 1916.

Check out the link below for event and venue details leading up to and on festival day and to find out how to secure a Centenary Medallion or souvenir stickers to own a piece of History and raise funds for the event.

Chairman's Report 2015-16

WANGI AREA SUSTAINABLE NEIGHBOURHOOD GROUP
I am pleased to provide the Chairperson’s report for our group for the 2015-16 year.
Over the year we have maintained a membership of about 45 with many others on our contact list.
Activities for each of our focus groups is reported on below.

Living Sustainably
Once again we ran a successful scarecrow competition which attracted some 40 entries. The theme was “living sustainably through recycling”. The competition culminated in an awards event held outside the Deck Cafe where the winners were announced.
My thanks go to Jane Smith for organising the event this year and to our judges Stefan Schelbert, Tom Evans and Rod Haines, also for their artistic contributions; Rose Peart and Marian Marcatilli.  My thanks also go to the sponsors of the event:
  • Lake Macquarie City Council
  • Wangi Bakery
  • Wangi RSL Club
  • Wangi Workers Club and
  • Rathmines Butchery
As a result of these contributions, we were able to support the Wangi Primary School’s community garden project.

Unfortunately the Garden Club has not continued this year.

Protecting and enhancing our natural environment
The group participated with other local residents in successfully retaining David St Reserve as community land, following a proposal by Lake Macquarie Council to reclassify and rezone this land for residential subdivision.
Our group is informed of Landcare activities by Garth Chapman at our monthly meetings and we have encouraged community support for several Landcare projects that have been undertaken during the year.

Improving community infrastructure and assets
Jane Smith has continued pursuing the placing of mosaic planter boxes in the village main street. Several applications for a grant funding have been made but none have been successful so far.

Building community participation through Festivals and Events
The main focus of the group this year has been in organising the Centenary Festival to be held on Sunday 23 October this year.
A presentation was made to the business community late last year and the Festival was officially launched in May this year at the Wangi Bowling Club.

Other Activities
The group made submissions to LMCC on:
  • the state of Kent Place;
  • disabled access in the village;
  • mosaic noticeboard at library.

Acknowledgements

I would like to thank our treasurer Ray Smith for his support during the year as well as all the members of the group for their interest and contributions.

We have a winner
The Judges have made their decision

The standard of scarecrows was very high and it was a very difficult decision for the judges.

We would like to thank scarecrows, makers, sponsors and the viewing public for making this a very successful event.

So here are the winners
