Landcare
As a result of several of our members having completed Landcare Leadership training we are excited to announce that WWDSNG now has its own Landcare group. The West Wallsend District Landcare Group.
The Landcare group will meet on the third Sunday of each month at our nominated project site. If you would like to join us in a Landcare project just contact us for details.
Established in April 2016, our aim is to identify Landcare projects in the area and, with the help of residents and council, begin restoration of these areas.
Being surrounded, as we are, with lots of bush and scrub, creeks and walking tracks, there is no shortage of work to be done.
Our first project will be the continuation of recovery work in Elizabeth street, Holmesville, adjoining Flaggy creek. We have already done some work at this site, which you can read about here.

Elizabeth St, Holmesville. 12months on and the results are apparent.- 20th August, 2017
Throughout 2016 and 2017 the site continued to be regenerated with regular work parties held monthly. The native grasses, cheese trees and lilly pillys are thriving, and the reduction in invasive species is apparent. Today we spread 4 cubic metres of mulch, provided by Teralba Landcare, which will help to keep the weeds down. The mulch will also serve as a border for the site.
Elizabeth St, Holmesville. Planting of native trees and grasses - 21st August, 2016
Following the preparatory clearing carried out last month, today we had the pleasure of planting some native trees and grasses. Trees we planted were Cheese trees, that are indigenous to the area. The grasses we planted were Carex and Lomandra. These plantings are adjacent to the public path that snakes through the area and will provide a pleasing backdrop to the scrub. Already in evidence are native Finches and Robins making a return and some native ferns and shrubs emerging from the newly cleared area.
Elizabeth St, Holmesville. Continuation of regeneration - 17th July, 2016
After having to postpone this activity in June due to bad weather,we hit the ground running and carried on where we left off in May. As the clearing of Lantana and Privet bush continues we can see the positive effect that this is having on the native fauna. Native grasses are starting to return and the bush itself is looking much better. A dedicated few are making a difference. Why not join us? Here are some photos of the days activities.
Elizabeth St, Holmesville. Continuation of clean-up work - 15th May, 2016
Members of West Wallsend District Landcare Group turned out to continue clearing of Lantana and Privet bush in Elizabeth st, Holmesville. The work resulted in the removal of much of the infestation and an opening of a corridor to more native bush. We intend to continue work at this site and eventually have it returned to its original native state. This portion was cleared in only a few hours and achieved an excellent result. If you would like to join us in a landcare project, send us an email or contact us here to get details of our next landcare activity.
