Holmesville Community Gardens

On October 6, 2016 our group was handed the keys to the disused tennis courts on the corner of George & Charlotte streets, Holmesville for the purpose of transforming the site into a Community Garden. Not only have we saved a valuable space from further degradation, and eventually loss to the community, we now have the potential to transform the site in to something of which the whole community can be a part.

The community garden site continues to be developed with shaded areas, a meeting hall and a storage shed all becoming valuable assets to the site and the community.

The Gardens are open to all members of West Wallsend District area who are encouraged to participation in regular garden gatherings where we carry out planting, maintenance, development and social activities.

Becoming a member of West Wallsend District Sustainable Neighbourhood gives you full access to the gardens and the produce generated therein.

Keep up-to-date with the latest new about Holmesville Community Gardens by following us on our Facebook page.

Landcare Group Established - April 2016

We are proud to announce that our Landcare Group is now up and running. To be known as the West Wallsend District Landcare Group our aim is to identify natural areas within our district that are in need of regeneration or rejuvination.

Flaggy Creek Planting - 10 December 2013

The West Wallsend District Sustainable Neighbourhood Group responded to a request from Lake Macquarie City Council's Urban Creek Renewal team, for assistance to plant around remediation work recently completed on Slatey Creek, near Elizabeth St, Holmesville. The team required assistance planting over bare rock used to stablise the area urgently in case of heavy rain.

Residents of Holmesville and members of the WWDSNG responded to the call for help with 8 volunteers able to assist LMCC and the Landcare guys plant 500 tubes that week. With ongoing efforts over the Christmas period the plants have survived the hot summer and are looking good.

Drysdale Creek-Edden Street Clean Up - 30 November 2013

West Wallsend District Sustainable Neighbourhood Group's first project, a clean up at Drysdale Creek-Edden Street behind the West Wallsend Swimming Centre was a successful first effort. Project Manager Chloe reported 3 recycling bins & one 200kg skip filled over a period of two hours on Saturday morning. Not a bad effort!

It was encouraging to see so many newcomers assisting and a big thank you must go to the 15 volunteers who came along and donated their time to help clean up a patch of our local area.

Our Launch Celebration - 31 August 2013

The launch of the West Wallsend District Sustainable Neighbourhood Group and Action Plan was a huge success! The sun was shining, the sausages were sizzling (thanks Stephen and Tina!), lots of friendly faces showed up, many neighbourly conversations were had and project ideas were aplenty...

It was extremely inspiring to see the sense of community and the love and passion that we all share for our neighbourhood.  The Fire and Rescue truck arrived to the delight of many young ones.  Congratulations to all of you and a big thank you for each and every contribution that helped reach this fantastic achievement.

We'd love for you to help decide what project the Group will work on first.  Use the contact form here, to find out when our next meeting is coming up, or to have your say - all ideas are welcome!
